Did you know you need to title your ATV in Texas – even though you can’t register it? You also need to title an ROV, UTV, or sand rail. In this article, we focus on how to obtain a bonded title for an ATV without the original title. We’ll also cover why Texas requires titling and the costs involved.

What is considered an ATV in Texas?

If your vehicle includes the following, it’s considered an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) in Texas:

  • Three or more tires
  • A seat (or seats) for a rider and one passenger
  • Designed for off-highway use
  • Not designed for farm or lawn care by the manufacturer
  • No more than 50 inches wide

Does Texas require a title for my ATV?

Yes, you must title your ATV to operate it in Texas. However, you don’t need to register your ATV for off-highway use.

You can get your off-highway vehicle license plate at your county tax assessor-collector’s office. Follow our instructions below.

What’s a bonded title?

A bonded title is a vehicle title with a surety bond attached. You may need a bonded title if your vehicle’s original title is missing. You can’t legally claim ownership of or sell your vehicle without a title.

What do I do if I bought an ATV without a title in Texas?

You may need a bonded title if your ATV’s title is missing, incorrect, or incomplete, and you can’t reach the seller for more documentation. Here’s the process for obtaining a bonded title for your ATV in Texas:

  • Determine your eligibility for an ATV bonded title. You must be a Texas resident or military personnel stationed in Texas. Your ATV can’t be nonrepairable or junked.
  • Complete a Bonded Title Application. Submit the application (along with a $15 fee, acceptable photo ID, and any supporting evidence of ownership) to the TxDMV Regional Service Center.
  • If your application is approved, you’ll receive a Notice of Determination for a Bonded Title or Tax Assessor-Collector Hearing. This form will tell you the bond amount you need, equaling 1.5 times your ATV’s value.
  • Buy a surety bond. You’ll have one year from your date of notice to get your title bond.
  • Apply for a bonded title for ATV in Texas. Take the following documents to your county tax office: your Notice of Determination for a Bonded Title, an Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, and any other applicable documents (see the TxDMV website for details).

How much does a bonded title cost for my ATV?
