How does a contractor license bond work?

Lake County ordinances provide criteria for obtaining a business license:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrates good moral character, defined as “a personal history of honesty, fairness, and respect for the rights of others”
  • Proof of education or experience, such as a diploma, transcript, or notarized affidavit from apprenticeship

The applicant must also provide the following items in their license application:

  • Certificate for general liability insurance with a $300,000 minimum
  • Certificate of worker’s compensation insurance or exemption form
  • A copy of a current business tax receipt
  • An affidavit agreeing to follow the scope of work of the license
  • A list of any disciplinary actions within the last five (5) years, only if applicable
  • A $5,000 Lake County contractor license bond
  • An application fee

Construction activities, including licensing, are overseen by the Lake County Office of Building Services. The license and bond are good for two-year terms, with an expiration date on September 30 of the second year. Both must be renewed before the deadline.
