Maryland Board of Well Drillers – Pump Installer License Bond
Who needs a pump installer license bond through the Board?
The Maryland Department of the Environment has configured the State Board of Well Drillers, responsible for licensing certain contractors in the state. These include well drillers, pump installers, and water conditioner installer contractors.
Pump installers across the state must post a $2,000 surety bond (see form preview) and complete an Application for License Examination. Follow these steps to complete the process:
- Submit the Application for License Examination form.
- Submit a $75 exam fee.
- Mail the application form and fee to the Maryland State Board of Well Drillers.
- Prepare for the exam by studying. The Board provides an apprentice pump installer & pump installer study guide.

How does a pump installer license bond work?
A contractor license bond protects your clients from damages should your work be deficient in some way. The bond guarantees that you, as the contractor, meet all applicable regulations and codes of the obligee (the State Board of Well Drillers). If you fail to follow the bond agreement in any way, clients can file a claim to request compensation.
To obtain your pump installer license bond in Maryland, you’ll pay a premium (a small percentage of the bond amount). ZipBonds can often issue bonds quickly at a typical annual rate of $100.

About ZipBonds.com
Founders Ryan Swalve and Zach Mefferd formed the vision for ZipBonds.com when they realized how overly complicated it was to help clients place surety. The frustration of being unable to incorporate the technology they’d used in other insurance-focused projects left them thinking “there has to be a better way.”
Fast forward a couple of years, and that better way is the impetus of everything we do at ZipBonds. We constantly look for innovative ways to improve the bonding process for our clients and agents. Our team comprises individuals who understand all angles of surety – for companies, agencies, and individuals. Incorporating everyone’s point of view to improve the process while simultaneously integrating cutting-edge technology is what sets our business apart.
